Portal handling system for laser cutting installation

Development and manufacture of a large portal handling system for two flat-bed lasers

Industry Industrial Automation Manufacturing Services Automation Laser automation Control / PLC

Assignment

The task was to develop a portal handling system 5 by 15 metres in size capable of loading and unloading two Trumpf flat-bed lasers with pallet changers fully automatically. The material gripper has to be able to pick up different sizes of metal sheets and automatically separate the finished parts from the remaining material and set them down.

Solution

For the implementation, a high-precision portal handling system was developed which precisely places and positions the raw material in different placement layouts on the shuttle table of the laser cutting installation. Following the processing step, the remaining parts and finished parts are separated from one another and put down. Optionally, the edges of the laser-cut parts can be broken out in a deburring system. The special gripper enables fully automatic separation of the oily sheet metal and the detection of double-sheets. An alignment station ensures precise positioning of the metal sheets on the gripper.

Customer benefits

The customer benefits from a significant increase in efficiency and productivity, as well as the option for a ghost shift thanks to fully automated loading and unloading of the two flat-bed lasers. Precise positioning and separation of the materials reduces waste and improves the quality of the end products. The production process is further optimised through integration of the deburring station, which reduces lead times and costs. The ability to handle different sizes provides the customer with flexibility and the capacity to adapt to different production requirements.
